We wanted to do something a little special for our 25th Festival. So we decided to create a space where everyone who’s shared our journey over the years could stop by, drop in, and say hello.
What better way to do this than to open up our home to our friends?
Welcome to The House of Food & Wine presented by Sensis. We want you to make our house, yours, for the ten days of the Festival, and we’ve enlisted some of Melbourne’s finest to help us make it a real home.
Tucked down a laneway in Little Lonsdale street, we’ll be open from midday every day, ready to serve you with a quick glass and a snack, or a relaxed night out with friends over tasting plates and a bottle or two.
There’s lots to love about our House Bar. Morgan McGlone (Belle’s Hot Chicken) is in charge of the kitchen, and the menu he’s put together is anything but ordinary.
Before starting Belle’s, Morgan has worked in some of the world’s best kitchens including Husk in Nashville and under three-Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire in Paris. The menu he’s created is a reinterpretation of dishes from some of those same kitchens. Each dish is inspired by a one of our favourite dishes from MasterClass over the years.
He had to come up some pretty genius ways to reimagine Michelin-starred fare, dishes that often has three or four cooks working on them, into wine-friendly snacking made from locally-available ingredients. All this with no oven to work with.
Sean Brock’s catfish became flathead tails; Rosio Sanchez’s potato and plum dessert transformed through soft-serve and dehydrated plum powder; and Bertrand Grébaut’s smoked wagyu achieved through Meatsmiths’ bresaola (Morgan’s favourite charcuterie source in Melbourne.)
As for the wine, the focus will be on Victorian. Overseen by Sommelier Mark Protheroe there will be a wine list available every day by the glass or bottle, along with two Patrick Sullivan wines served straight from the barrel, made especially for the Festival.
There will be a wine wall of special bottles gathered from wineries across Victoria. Each night just one or two will be opened and sold by the glass until they run out.
Mark will be there and also a team of roving sommeliers who will pop in for a few hours to choose bottles from the wall and talk to Festival-goers about them.
Not forgetting the beer lovers out there - Hawkers will have a full range of thirst-quenchers available.
