Meet the Final Six

It’s getting down to the wire in the race to win the 2018 Hostplus Hospitality Scholarship. We will be announcing the winner on 9 July, but before we do – meet the final six.

They are chosen from a highly competitive group of over 150 applicants from all corners of the Australian hospitality industry. The winner will go on the work experience of a lifetime in three international locations that inspire their hospitality dreams. MFWF will use its extensive network to place the winner in businesses that can allow the winner to learn, develop and discover new skills and ideas that will take their career to the next level. Upon their return, the winner will also receive a year-long mentorship with a local industry legend to help them build on what they’ve learned.

The top three will spend a development day with chef and Hostplus ambassador Shane Delia, learning what it takes to make a mark on the hospitality industry.

Here are the final six:

Conan Gomes
Hospitality is Conan’s passion. Whilst studying Hospitality & Marketing, he worked his way through fast food, cafes, & restaurants before opening a catering company. He loves the discipline& energy of the kitchen and the theatre in the front. He is ambitious to learn both worlds in order to establish his own restaurant. You’ll catch Conan in the YoIndia food truck, making the rounds at festivals and the ever-popular Welcome to Thornbury.

Shelly McElroy
As Merivale’s Training and Development Advisor, Shelly McElroy is responsible for the Group's training resources, programs and initiatives. Shelly holds a Bachelor of Science (Media and Communications) with distinction, majoring in Television from Preston University of Central Lancashire, UK.

Kay-Lene Tan
Melbourne-born, and Singapore-raised – this unique combination has fuelled the inspiration for Pastry Chef Kay-Lene Tan's dessert creations. Growing up in a Peranakan household, she was always surrounded by great food. She started her culinary journey in Singapore, working for some of the world's best chefs such as Chef Joel Robuchon, and Chef Andres Lara. She is currently the Head Pastry Chef of Tonka and Coda in Melbourne. She was the winner of the Rising Star award at the FoodService Magazine Women In FoodService Awards 2017, and the first runner-up in the San Pellegrino Young Chef Pacific 2015.

Sarah Cavaiuolo
Industry experience paired with her passion for food and travel has taken Sarah around the world. From picking grapes and making organic wine the old-world way in Southern Italy, backpacking and cooking secret family recipes with friendly locals throughout South America and managing the floor of some amazing Restaurants closer to home. Her time in hospitality both here and abroad has taught her many valuable lessons. Sarah’s work with OzHarvest gives her the perfect opportunity to share those lessons with at-risk youth and assist them to enter the hospitality industry. The more experience she can gain, the more she has to share!

Jenni Bryant
Jenni began her coffee career in 2006 as a barista, working for the World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies. After returning to her native USA, she worked as a manager for Gimme! Coffee in New York, and then as coffee roaster at Ecco Cafe in California. Jenni relocated to Melbourne in 2009 to work for Market Lane Coffee as General Manager, and Rwandan coffee buyer. She is particularly interested in the positive role employers can take in the lives of their employees, and the various ways a business can engage with the communities to which they belong.

Brett Goss
After years studying and practicing in the world of financial services, Brett resolved to pursue his long-term passion as a career – food and wine. Now working as a sommelier at Shobosho in Adelaide, he strives to apply the same dedication to his career as those in the corporate world. Brett is having the absolute time of his life and he endeavours to educate and engage with as many people as possible to hopefully encourage more young people to actively pursue hospitality as a legitimate (and exciting) career.
